Will late harvest wheat really reduce production?

If harvesting time is not right, wheat yield per mu will be reduced by about 100 jin. In the countryside, experienced farmers all know this sentence: "Nine ripeness, ten harvest, ten ripeness, one loss". This means that the best harvest time of wheat is when the wheat is nine ripe, not when the wheat is ten ripe, that is to say, the wax ripening time of wheat is the best harvest time.

  Markers of wheat maturity

The harvest time of wheat is mainly determined by the maturity of wheat grains. The mature stage of wheat can be divided into milk stage, wax stage and complete stage. Stems and leaves in milky stage gradually change from green to yellow-green, and grains have milk-like inclusions. At the end of milk ripening, the volume and fresh weight of grains reached the maximum value, the color of grains turned pale yellow, the groin was green, the moisture content of grains was 45% - 50%, and the moisture content of stalks was 65% - 75%. The content of wax-ripening grain was waxy, and the hardness changed from soft to hard with the ripening process.

Leaves withered and yellow, grains hardened, showing the true color of varieties, water content below 20%, water content of stems 20-30%. After the ripening period, the branch of wheat grain nutrition will flow back into the straw, resulting in a decrease in grain weight. The yield per mu will be reduced by 30 kg to 50 kg. In case of continuous rain and clouds, the grain will germinate and mold, the quality will deteriorate, and the loss will be greater.

How to correctly determine the wax ripening period of wheat?

Early stage of wax ripening: the back of the grain is yellow-white, and the groin is yellow-green. It is easy to pinch the grain with fingernails. The grain contains substances such as wax, and can be rubbed into strips. Upper glume and neck of panicle turn yellow, most leaves begin to turn yellow, only the top 1 to 2 leaves are still green.
In the middle stage of wax ripening, the grains are all yellow, soft and elastic. It is easy to pinch the grains with fingernails. The 1000-grain weight approaches or reaches the maximum value. The top of the stem turns yellow and the base of the glume remains green. When the awns begin to fry, the straw is still elastic.
At the end of wax ripening stage, the plants were all yellow, the stalks remained elastic, and the shape and color of the grains were the same as those of the original varieties. It was not easy to pinch the grains with fingernails, and the 1000-grain weight reached the maximum.
During the whole wax-ripening period, nitrogen-containing substances and soluble carbohydrates of plants continued to be transported from stem and leaf to grains, and stopped until the end of wax-ripening period, during which the water content of grains had dropped to 20-30%.

The best harvest time of the day for wheat

The best time of the day is: 9:00-11:00; 16:00-18:00. There are two reasons for choosing these two time periods: dew on wheat straw has not evaporated completely before 9 o'clock, 11 o'clock to 16 o'clock, the weather is too hot, the wheat straw is dry, and after 18 o'clock, dew begins slowly.
During these two periods, the wheat is not wet, easy to thresh, and not too dry. If the straw is too dry, the grains are easy to collapse automatically, and it is not easy to return the grains to the warehouse.
We should pay close attention to the changes of wheat grain hair before harvesting. When checking the grain, we should select the representative spike of this field, and then take the middle grain of this spike for testing. Because the same spike of wheat is not mature at the same time, but gradually mature from top to bottom.
